Ortolan on Bayswater
On Thursdays a crew of Secret Foodies celebrated Bastille Day early at The Ortolan on Bayswater. In honour of the national day of France, we enjoyed a feast of epic proportions, a hearty peasant-style family meal in the bistro area of the two-hatted restaurant. Chef Paul McGrath excels within the disciplines of French cuisine and was inspired by the rustic flavours of the south-western French Provence.
First up was a platter featuring a selection of the house-made charcuterie, enjoyed with a selection of baguette, toasted brioche and crisp seaweed bread. Citrus and cognac cured ocean trout with horseradish chantilly was also there for the sharing, along with a brandade of house-salted ling with soft quail’s egg.
Main courses was presented in a red crockpot, the lid was lifted to reveal a navarin of 14-hour braised Milly-Hill lamb shoulder, breast, tripe and sweetbreads. Chunks of incredibly tender lamb were doused in a rich gravy, and matched perfectly with a . The second offering was acassoulet of white beans, confit duck, Toulouse sausage, bacon lardons and baked beans.
Dessert was a decadent treat of alternate serves warm dark chocolate biscuit chaud with yoghurt sorbet, and white chocolate and hazelnut bombe Alaska. Both went down much too easily with the smooth and sweet dessert wine, a French riesling.

Sadly Ortolan on Bayswater has since closed.

Tres magnifique!
Divine! The bombe alaska was to die for and the freshly baked bread was even better than expected.
Fantastic, truely memorable!
Gorgeous food and service
I would sell my first born child, ok maybe only my second, for the selection of home-made charcuterie.
Great night. Great food. Loved the charcuterie!
Looking forward to the next adventure.
Great food, entertaining company and all in all a wonderful refreshing experience. Look forward to the next outing.
Wow. This dinner was absolutely fantastic. From the muse bouche of an elegant crab bisque into a varied, delicate, savory charcuterie where each smear upon the fresh bread was a new experience. Then into a dinner of cassoulet and lamb that reminds me of the pleasures of family holiday meals with the French side of our family. Truly wonderful meal. I will be back!
A great reincarnation of former Bayswater Brasserie… Fabulous Sophisticated Peasant French fare. Can’t wait to come back to try the metre long cheese board and apparently you can also get food to go.
Really enjoyed each course. Flavoursome and texture rich. Highly recommended. Will definitely come back and try the fine dining too!
Not so much oohh la la but rather ahhhh…..mazing. Great meal, incredibly authentic. Highly recommended.
Best charcuterie and the terrine was delicious! I loved the whole experience and the regional French food we were introduced to. Absolutely beautiful.
Best French meal I’ve had. Super impressive.
Such a delightful surprise to end up through the doors of Ortolan on Bayswater. A hidden delight at the back of Kings Cross serving delicious hearty French provincial cuisine! My favorite was the lamb navarin, closely followed by the charcuterie platter of rabbit rillette and pigs head terrine – which is so much tastier than it sounds. Look forward to some sneaky wines and cheeses here in the future
Ortolan what a fantastic restaurant. Great food, wine and company. Definitely will be back for the meter long charcuterie plate.
Great atmosphere, matched with amazing food and wine.
Didn’t know much about French food but after tonight, it has left me wanting more. I will definitely coming back. The selection of house charcuterie was a delight.
My first experience of a Secret Foodies night. Great venue and very well organized.
Ortolan. Wonderful food. A great mixture of decadence and good quality wholesome food.
A strong recommendation for both Secret Foodies and Ortolan. Do it!!!
The casual dining experience allowed me to appreciate the great food that Ortolan had on offer. The staff were very courteous and very knowledgeable about both the food and wine. Ortolan us highly recommended for groups and couple’s.
No better way to celebrate La Fete than at a rustic French restaurant. Deep earthy flavors counterbalanced with fine delicate treats at the end of the meal. Great service, wine and venue.
Ortolan on Bayswater was the perfect restaurant to celebrate Bastille Day! The house-made charcuterie was a definite winner. The lamb was cooked perfect, so tender that you didn’t even have to use your knife. The desserts were also absolutely amazing. Every detail from the food to the service was perfectly executed for a fabulous evening. Highly recommended!
Excellent food, lovely ambient restaurant, topped off by a chat with the chef Paul McGrath. Thanks for another great night Alex!
