My friend Massimo Mele and I have been talking about doing an event together for well over a year. Although Mass’s accent is as Aussie as meat pies he’s originally from Naples and the idea of Italian street food has always been an underlying theme in his cooking. Mass is the Executive Chef of the Hugo’s group, most famous for their award winning pizza. The idea behind Italian Food Fair was to offer diners a taste of authentic Italian food from Naples as though they were wandering around a night time food market.
Finding the right location took months. Miss Freakie stumbled across a new coffee showroom called DC Laundry in Woolloomooloo run by the Sydney team for DC Coffee. Being a Melbourne based company they had just taken over a random building and turned it into a place for cafe owners to come play with their coffee and shiny machines. We went to their launch party and had a super fun night with the team. As the boys often say, they’re “serious about coffee, not themselves”. We instantly loved the space and wanted to create an event at the laundry. We also really loved their coffee and wanted to share it with our foodies.
We now had a theme, chef and a location. Next we needed a fun wine brand to come on board and this event would really fly. You wouldn’t expect to see riedel glasses and serious wine snobs in a night time market in Naples. What we needed was great wine that matched well with Italian food and had a bit of cheek and personality. Two Italian Boys is less than two years old and after meeting the owners at Taste Festival earlier this year and loving their marketing “take us home tonight” it was an obvious choice.
Perrier water came on board to keep guests hydrated with their sparkling water while husband and wife duo Peter and Marie Rappolt from Viva the Duo entertained guests with Italian street music. Taking a bare showroom and creating a one night only pop-up market takes imagination and of course open minded guests. Thanks to everyone who came along and made the night fun and memorable.
Here’s pics of the food to drool over if you missed out:
