Christmas in July (Syd)

It was that time of year again- the reindeer jumpers were out and it was time for our annual Christmas in July experience.

Christmas in July never fails to bring a hefty dose of festive cheer, and this year’s celebration brought with it more incredible dress ups, great wine and food than ever before. The secret location was revealed via text message two hours prior to the event, luring curious diners to Butcher and the Farmer at Tramsheds. Created for the love of food, the land and the vines, Butcher and the Farmer prides itself on simple and honest flavour combinations.

For our annual Christmas in July feast, the light and bright dining room transformed into a festive wonderland, complete with twinkling fairy lights, tea light candles, stunning florals and of course, a Christmas tree.

On arrival, guests were treated to a choice of Grant Burge Sparkling Shiraz Cabernet NV or Grant Burge Sparkling Blanc de Noir NV.

Share style entrées included English favourite, pigs in blankets (a favourite dish of chef Steve Flood who designed the menu). The tasty bacon-wrapped sausages were decadent and downright delicious. Served alongside these were equally moorish smoked salmon crostinis with artichoke, spinach and capers.

Grant Burge is one of the most popular wineries in the Barossa Valley and perfect for any festive occasion. To complement our entree dishes we enjoyed the Grant Burge The Vigneron Chardonnay 2014.

It wouldn’t be a true Christmas without a hearty roast dinner, and Butcher and the Farmer didn’t disappoint. Succulent pork belly with a hefty layer of crackling made for the culinary centrepiece, teamed with low and slow cooked lamb shoulder. A combination of brussel sprouts with cauliflower puree and cranberries, heirloom carrots, honeyed parsnips and duck fat potatoes made for suitably decadents sides. To tie everything together, lashings of Grandma’s gravy and bread sauce were served.

To match this heart main, a suitably robust selection of Grant Burge reds were poured. Guests were given a choice of two premium drops - the Grant Burge Holy Trinity GSM 2015 and the Grant Burge Corryton Park Cabernet Sauvignon 2013.

With bellies full and festive cheer at an all time high, it was time for the annual Kris Kringle swap. Each year, guests are instructed to bring along a gift valued at no more than $5. With Ms Darlinghurst instructing diners to swap their presents, guests opened everything from chocolates to cheeky calendars, candles and more.

With Christmas carols playing merrily in the background, it was soon time for the final course of the day. Christmas tiramisu with drunken cherries made for a popular end to a long and lavish Christmas feast, teamed with the new Super Rare 40 Year Old Fortified Tawny.

Butcher and the Farmer crafted a menu that will no doubt inspire guests to come back in hoards, or to at least host a Christmas in July event of their own!
