No Aussie summer is quite complete without a secret rooftop dinner.

Imagine climbing the stairs to an exclusive secret rooftop dinner on a balmy summer’s night. Awaiting you is an Asian inspired feast with perfectly paired Handpicked wines. Well, that’s what happened when Secret Foodies met Kensington Street’s Private Kitchen.

You’ll find The Private Kitchen located in the Old Rum Store in the heart of the Kensington Street precinct. Just look for the neon red Spice Alley sign, it will guide you through the more casual dining area complete with red and yellow festoon lanterns. Next to that is a multi-level building which used to be the Carlton United Brewery and now hosts a number of delicious new restaurants.

Guests were sent the “secret meeting point” at 5pm instructing them to meet at the new Handpicked Wines Cellar Door at the end of Kensington Street. Upon arrival they were greeted with a glass of Handpicked Wines premium Prosecco and invited to take a look around the striking new building. With bubbles in hand, guests mingled with each other, exchanging names and their mutual passion for good food.

Then it was time to leave and make our way to the rooftop. Escorted by Ms Darlinghurst guests we led down Kensington Street, up the stairs and to the final destination.

Here, tables were decorated with beautiful green vines and orchids and Secret Foodies signature masks.

Guests sampled a series of small, individual starters to awaken the palate. First on the list was the sliced kingfish served with smoked longan, sesame coconut salad and Yuzu soy. Then it was on to probably the most popualr dish of the evening – the grilled glacier 51 toothfish with spicy pumpkin sauce and bacon bread dumpling.

We followed on with the squid ink – rice flour cup, served with pulled chicken, blood orange and roasted peanut.

To compliment these delectable starters were a selection of Handpicked Wines. Clare Riesling and crisp Yarra Valley Rosé circulated on the Thursday night, with Prosecco, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc on the Friday night.

For mains we were presented with nothing less than a feast!

The fish amok on banana leaf cup with coconut cream was one of the highlights of the night with other delicious dishes such as the BBQ tumeric chicken with curry paste, cucumber and Yuzu vinaigrette evoking collective ‘mmmms’ around the table.

Pork belly braised in coconut water, longan, chili and ginger was another popular dish along with the accompanying grilled cabbage, king brown mushrooms topped with truffle oil and orange soy.

These flavour heavy main dishes required nothing less than some robust reds. Thursday night’s guests sampled Margaret River Cabernet whilst Friday night’s guests sampled Handpicked Shiraz and Paxton MV Shiraz.

Dessert was something to behold. Young coconut ice-cream bowl, served with sweet corn, palm seeds, pomegranete and topped with crunchy peanuts.

Our first Secret Foodies rooftop event was such a fun experience, made all the better by the hospitable crew at The Private Kitchen. If you haven’t yet visited Kensington Street do yourself a favour and check it out!
